// //Name: Calendar plugin
// //Author: SteveRumsby

// //Syntax:
// //<< {calendar} >> or << {} >> or << {} >> or << {calendar thismonth} >>

// //Description:
// //The first form produces an full-year calendar for the current year. The second produces a full-year calendar for the given year. The third produces a single month calendar for the given month and year. The fourth form produces a single month calendar for the current month.
// // Weekends and holidays are highlighted (see below for how to specify holdays).

// //Todo:
// //* Improve the formatting, especially when included in MainMenu
// //* Find a better way of specifying holidays. It would be good to support calculated dates (e.g. Easter), and dates for different countries.
// //* Add browsing facilities like jscalendar has
// //* Highlight "today", if visible...
// //* Integrate with the ReminderMacros

// //Configuration:
// //Modify this section to change the text displayed for the month and day names, to a different language for example. You can also change the format of the tiddler names linked to from each date, and the colours used.

!Research Topics
Here I would like to broadlly descibe my research area. It is a part of hydrology. Hydrology is the study of the movement, distribution, and quality of water throughout the Earth and thus addresses both the hydrologic cycle and water resources. Although hydrologic cycle is a continuous cycle but if we start from the precipitation and this is the soil moisture who decide the distribution of water into various hydrologic cycle component (like grounwater, surface runoff, evapo-transpiration etc.). Thus better understanding of soil moisture will give the better understanding of these components.

Soil moisture can be measured by direct methods (oven drying) and by laboratory methods (Karl Fischer titration). These methods gives a good estimate of soil moisture but are time consuming and determination of soil moisture at field level becomes a problem. At watershed/field level soil moisture can be measured by geophysical methods in which we indirectly measure the soil moisture. Geophysical methods include neutron probe, time-domain reflectometry (TDR), frequency domain sensor, capitance probe, electrical resistivity tomography, ground penetrating radar (GPR) etc. Geophysical methods are less accurate than direct/laboratory methods but are faster than them, and give a reasonable estimate of soil moisture. But geophysical methods are also not suitable for soil moisture measurements in bigger area as estimation of hydrologic components require the soil moisture measurements in bigger area. Satellite remote sensing methods can be used soil moisture measurements at whole globe but they due to lack of calibration at global level and due to sensivity of satellite remote sensing methods with parameters other than soil moisture like plantation, soil rougness etc. we are not able to calculate the soil moisture at whole globe. And these remote sensing methods provide information only about surface soil moisture that varies upto few centimeters and spatial resolution is also pure. To estimate the soil moisture at reasonable scale, at depth below few centimetrs, we need to combine all these strategy. My reaserach interest is to develope a methodology to optimally combine all these methods of direct/indirect measurements of soil moisture and to calculate the amount of precipitaion that goes as a runoff, into groudwater and back into atmosphere. And I can classify my research area into:

!Soil Moisture Modelling
One way to calculate the soil moistue is by means of mathematical models. One such model is Richard's equation and this equation is in the form of partial diffrential equation and no analytical solution of this exist for field boundary conditions. So we require the numerical solution of this equation.

To solve the Richard's equation we require the constitutive relationship one such famous relationship is van Genuchtan model. Some of the parameters of this equation is not directly measurable and are time consuming.

!Inverse Modelling
As already mention all the parameters are not directly measurable, so at a bigger scale we require some others technique to get the parametrs. This is done by inverse modelling in which we try to minimize the error between prediction and measured soil moistures by means of optimization algorithm. This can be done in laboratory in controlled condition or in the field itself. There are several such optimization algorithm like LM, GLUE, ant colony and particle swarm etc.

!Data Assimilation
With all the best available models for soil moisture, their constitutive relationship and inverse modelling, till we are not able to achieve the error exactly or very near to zero in field condition. This may be due to the fact that boundary conditions and measured soil moisture both have some uncertainty. So we require some methods that can combine the prediction and measurements and give the best estimate for future. This is done by means of data assimilation in which we calculate error between prediction and measured value and update the model to get the best value at present time and for future also.

I work in the research areas including groundwater hydrology, agro-hydrology, satellite hydrology and urban hydrogeology. My interests include analysis of flow and reactive transport in groundwater systems, field-scale experiments in watershed hydrology, hydroclimatic & anthropogenic controls on groundwater, numerical methods, geospatial & geophysical methods, optimization & inverse problems, and modeling of environmental hydraulic processes.

<<clearOtherTiddlers>>
!Research Areas
Research Website               http://www.ambhas.com/

* Groundwater resource assessment under the influence of climatic variations and anthropogenic effects using numerical modeling, statistical tools and field studies.
* Retrieval of near surface soil moisture from radar remote sensing (SAR) and estimating profile soil moisture using modeling and assimilation at watershed scale.
* Retrieval of rainfall and modeling of ET from remote sensing and assimilating into distributed hydrological models.
* Stochastic modeling of flow and reactive solute transport in heterogeneous porous media. Theoretical studies and field scale experiments.
* Integrated geochemical and hydrological studies in tropical regions using experimental watersheds.
* Modeling groundwater in urban environments for resource and infrastructure studies.

@@color(orange):(1) Retrieval of hydrological variables from remote sensing.@@
Calibration and validation of satellite retrievals of soil moisture, evapotranspiration, crop variables (e.g. leaf area index) and soil hydraulic properties from
optical and microwave remote sensing.

@@color(orange):(2) Analysis of groundwater recharge, balance and behaviour at different scales in hard rock aquifers.@@
Kabini CZO comprises of nested catchments of four orders (< 10 Km2, 80 Km2, 600 Km2 and 8000 Km2) on granitic-gnessic rock aquifers of global significance.
These are being investigated to develop scale dependent relationships in hard rock aquifers and methods & modelling tools to for groundwater balance and
disaggregation approaches for small watershed scales.

@@color(orange):(3) Effects of land use and land cover on recharge in semi-arid tropical soils.@@
The semi-arid areas have relatively higher ET and lower recharge and there is high degree of uncertainty in estimates of recharge in tropical soils.
Further, in this millennium, the crop choice, the farming & irrigation practices are resulting in altered recharge. Through test sites in Kabini CZO, recharge,
water use efficiency and improved crop productivity are being investigated using coupled models of crop and groundwater. The CZO comprises of paired
catchments - forest and agricultural – to compare between the land cover types and to study the effects of climatic variability.

@@color(orange):(4) Modeling the water-rock interactions in tropical semi-arid catchments.@@
Tropical semi-arid catchments produce a greater percentage of weathered products (e.g. calcium, magnesium, silica) to the stream and eventually to ocean
through the groundwater pathway. As there were no long term observatories in tropics relative to the temperate regions little is known about the fluxes from
the groundwater. Paired experimental catchments (forested and agricultural) in Kabini CZO are investigated for chemical fluxes through field experiments and
modelling studies.

@@color(orange):(5) Analysis of nitrate transport and transformation in semi-arid soils.@@
The semi-arid agricultural parts of Kabini CZO have higher nitrates in groundwater (several times higher than the drinking water limit). The mechanisms of
leaching of nitrate affected by soil & crop types, land use practices, aquifer conditions in tropical semi-arid soils is relatively less known. Investigations through
laboratory and field experiments combined with modelling are being pursued in test sites of CZO towards this theme.

!Industrial consultancy:
Conducted more than @@color(orange): 30 consulting projects@@ in the areas of watershed hydrology, urban groundwater hydrology, hydraulic model studies for pump-sump design, and hydraulic analysis & design of surge protection systems for water supply projects.

* The Bangalore metro rail corporation proposes four underground tunnels of 3-4 km length at a depth of 17m below the ground in the central business district region. The groundwater is extensively used in the city of Bangalore thereby the hydrogeological study becomes important for assessing the groundwater flow in the hard rock lithology characterized by saprolite (weathered zone) overlying the crystalline fractured bed rock. The study used modeling combined with extensive field data for assessing the potential impacts to the groundwater system due to the proposed tunnels for metro rail. http://bmrc.co.in/pdf/news/IISc-Report.pdf

* Groundwater inflow into tunnels during tunnel construction is a common and challenging problem faced by tunnel designers and requires suitable steps to be taken to reduce the groundwater inflow into the tunnel during the construction and in the long run both from the stability aspects as well as environmental consequences. The later aspect in cultivated areas with the groundwater irrigation is the potential impacts in the event of groundwater drawdown and loss of groundwater resources due to the drainage and leakage through the tunnel. The upper Bhadra project is under taken by Karnataka Neeravari Nigama Limited (KKNL), Government of Karnataka. The project is to provide water to Chitradurga and other areas from Bhadra reservoir. The project involves the lifting of water from the reservoir and flows through the open canal and passes through the tunnel, which comes under upper Bhadra project. The aim of the project is to perform modeling and assessing the potential impacts to the groundwater system due to the proposed tunnel and proposing suitable site specific strategies to eliminate any unfavorable effects on the groundwater system due to the proposed tunnel.

* Hydraulic model studies are carried out in the laboratory for assessing the pump-sump designs for thermal power stations. Scaled models are built and experiments are performed for various hydraulic conditions to identify surface and subsurface vortices, if any, in the sump chamber, major recirculation zones in the forebay and velocity distributions in the sump chamber and suction tube entry. The model observations provide an opportunity to improve the flow condition in the forebay and sump chamber. The final aim of these studies is to achieve a flow condition in the sump chamber and around the entry location to the suction draft tube, without the formation of any detrimental vortex.

* Hydraulic analysis and design of surge protection systems for pumping mains of water supply projects using mathematical models for simulating the effects of water hammer for various operating conditions in the pump manifold and transmission pipe(s) due to power failure condition for the pumps.

Selected projects are listed below:

/***
| Name|ToggleTagPlugin|
| Description|Makes a checkbox which toggles a tag in a tiddler|
| Version|3.0 ($Rev: 1845 $)|
| Date|$Date: 2007-03-16 15:19:22 +1000 (Fri, 16 Mar 2007) $|
| Source|http://tiddlyspot.com/mptw/#ToggleTagMacro|
| Author|Simon Baird <simon.baird@gmail.com>|
| License|http://mptw.tiddlyspot.com/#TheBSDLicense|
!Usage
{}//{TagName TiddlerName LabelText}//{}
* TagName - the tag to be toggled, default value "checked"
* TiddlerName - the tiddler to toggle the tag in, default value the current tiddler
* LabelText - the text (gets wikified) to put next to the check box, default value is '{TagName}' or '{TagName TiddlerName}'
(If a parameter is '.' then the default will be used)

Examples:

|Code|Description|Example|h
|{}|Toggles the default tag (checked) in this tiddler|<<toggleTag>>|
|{}|Toggles the TagName tag in this tiddler|<<toggleTag TagName>>|
|{}|Toggles the TagName tag in the TiddlerName tiddler|<<toggleTag TagName TiddlerName>>|
|{}|Same but with custom label|<<toggleTag TagName TiddlerName 'click me'>>|
|{}|dot means use default value|<<toggleTag . . 'click me'>>|
Notes:
* If TiddlerName doesn't exist it will be silently created
* Set label to '-' to specify no label
* See also http://mgtd-alpha.tiddlyspot.com/#ToggleTag2

!Known issues
* Doesn't smoothly handle the case where you toggle a tag in a tiddler that is current open for editing
